Gardening and Nature in EYFS
I believe the next generation are so important in regards to caring for and protecting our planet and wildlife. A love of nature and wildlife starts at a very early age and the garden is a great environment to learn about maths concepts, read stories, dance, sing and much more.
Challenge
The staff team do not know how to get the most out of the outdoor environment. They do not know what to plant when or how they can encourage wildlife into the garden. They need ideas and inspiration on improvements they can make to encourage a love of nature and wildlife.

Action
On my visit I observed the space and assessed what was already in place at the setting. I then considered what could be added and where to encourage plant growing, encourage bees and bugs to share the garden with us and to stimulate all the senses in a way that only nature can. I discussed with them the magic of the changing of the seasons and how your garden and activities can reflex this change. I explained the importance of practical activities to encourage learning, and I showed them that nature is everywhere and its beautiful.

Outcome
Staff have a greater understanding and care for the natural environment at their setting. They have built a bug hotel and have plans to grow more fruit, veg and flowers next year. They are going to be more proactive in ensuring that nature and outdoor activities are included in their enhanced provision and that it plays an important role in their curriculum and ethos.
